Credit for Prior Learning: Configuration Guide

Overview

Program Pathways Mapper can now display Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) information for applicable courses. This enhancement helps make CPL opportunities more visible to students exploring their educational pathways.

This article explains what CPL is, how it works in Program Pathways Mapper, and what to expect from this new feature.

What is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning is a way colleges identify other ways in which students have acquired the knowledge that a course is teaching. These may be licenses, certifications, work experience, or other related experiences that directly relate to course content.

If students don't have the specific license, certificate, or experience that the course indicates as already accepted forms of credit, challenge exams or taking the final exam early are often accepted and offered. Challenge exams allow students to earn credit, even if a license or other experience they believe should be applicable is not currently accepted.

What You Need to Know

  • CPL information will be displayed on applicable courses through a special icon
  • The system will automatically pull in CPL data, but only data that has been officially approved by your institution in accordance with CPL standards
  • If your institution has not approved data with the CPL/MAP team, it will not be displayed
  • Students will be able to see:
    • Contact information for CPL advisors
    • Possible qualifications for CPL - Suggested evidence to support CPL claims
      • Any provided notes (If no notes are provided, this will not be displayed)
  • This enhancement makes CPL opportunities more visible to students exploring their educational pathways

How CPL Information Appears

When a course is eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, it will display:

  1. Course Card Icon: A CPL icon appears on course cards for applicable courses

  1. Collapsible Panel: When students click on courses with CPL options, they'll see a collapsible panel with CPL details

  1. Structured Information: The panel includes:
    1. Contact information for CPL advisors
    2. Possible qualifications - Suggested evidence
      1. Additional notes (if applicable)

No Action Required

No action is required from you at this time for the CPL enhancement. The system will automatically pull in CPL data that has been approved by your institution and provided to the CPL/MAP Team.
